In October 2012, Vancouver developer Michael Audain announced that he entered into an agreement with Resort Municipality of Whistler to build a 25,000 sq. ft. museum to house a portion of his extensive art collection.
On April 30, 2013 Audain announced that he decided to expand to 56,000 sq. ft.
Site work started in August 2013 and the Museum will be open to the public in January 2016.
The Museum will contain a permanent collection of the art of British Columbia from early times to the present day. Particular strengths will be an outstanding collection nineteenth century Northwest Coast masks, one of Canada’s strongest Emily Carr collections, and a selection of Vancouver’s celebrated photo-based art. There will also be a gallery devoted to West Coast artist Edward J. Hughes.
In March 2015, the AFOW board granted $100,000 to be paid $20,000 annually for 5 years. All gifts to the Foundation are invested with the permanent endowment of the Audain Art Museum Foundation which has been created to ensure the longterm financial success of the Museum.
